What Time Of Day Should You Take Toprol XL (Metoprolol ER)?

In our latest question and answer, the pharmacist discusses administration times for Toprol XL (metoprolol ER).

I take my Toprol ER 25 mg at lunch. My doctor said to just take it once a day at the same time. I'm thinking about gradually taking it a little later in the day. So that when school starts back I won't need to take it there. Because it's extended release, does it make a difference when I take it? Will it also help me by being sleepier in the evening, then during the work day? Sometimes it seems like I'm sleepy after taking it. But maybe it's just whatever I had for lunch.

  • Hypotension or low blood pressure
  • Bradycardia or slow heart beat
  • Dizziness
  • Depression

About Toprol XL (Metoprolol Succinate)

Toprol XL (metoprolol succinate) is classified as a "beta-blocker", specifically a beta-1 selective adrenergic antagonist. It is used for a variety of indications including high blood pressure (hypertension), post heart attack (myocardial infarction) and migraine prophylaxis. Toprol XL is typically dosed once to twice daily and should be given with food or immediately after food to enhance absorption. Unlike most extended release products, Toprol XL can be safely cut or split one time as the active ingredient (metoprolol) is contained in "micropellets", evenly distributed throughout the tablet. It should not be crushed however as this will ruin the extended release properties of the medication.
