What is the difference in Cetirizine and EQ Cetirizine? I am normally prescribed Cetirizine but pharmacy give me EQ Cetrizine this time and I just want to make sure it is safe for me to take. Thank you!

Answer

"EQ cetirizine" doesn't come up in a drug database but it most likely simply refers to the manufacturer Equate, the Wal-Mart store brand of health and personal care products. If it was dispensed as a prescription, they may have simply used the tablets from the over the counter product. If you are unsure about what you were dispensed, be sure to reach out to your pharmacy.

Cetirizine is the generic name for Zyrtec, a second-generation antihistamine. It is commonly used for seasonal allergies and the treatment of symptoms associated with allergies such as a runny nose and sneezing. One dose of cetirizine lasts around 24 hours and can therefore be taken once a day.

Cetirizine, although classified as a second-generation antihistamine like Claritin and Allegra, is not considered non-drowsy. About 10% of individuals who take the medication experience drowsiness or sedation.
