There are a few options when it comes to taking an over the counter (OTC) medication to relieve symptoms of allergies that are safe to take with Adderall. Most antihistamines, such as Benadryl, Claritin and Zyrtec are safe to take.

Antihistamines are drugs used to treat allergies that reduce the natural effects of histamine in the body. Histamine is the chemical that is responsible for triggering allergy like function, watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, etc.

Below, we discuss your options in more detail.

Benadryl (Diphenhydramine)

Benadryl is a first generation antihistamine used to treat the symptoms of allergies including:

  • Itchy nose/throat/skin
  • Promoting sleep
  • Preventing motion sickness

Take 1 capsule or tablet (25 mg diphenhydramine) orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed for allergies. Benadryl would not be a good choice if you need to be alert or operate a car as it may cause drowsiness and impaired coordination. Other common side effects include

  • Dizziness

  • Constipation

Zyrtec (Cetirizine)

  • Dry mucous membranes
  • Diarrhea
  • Pharyngitis
