Answer

Yes, it is safe to take Zyrtec (cetirizine) with aspirin. There are no interactions between the two medications. In addition, they do not share similar side effects and are both generally well tolerated.

Below, I discuss some general information regarding both drugs.

About Zyrtec

Zyrtec is a "second-generation" antihistamine, used for the treatment of seasonal allergies (i.e. allergic rhinitis) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (i.e. hives). It is also used "off-label" for the symptomatic treatment of atopic dermatitis.

Compared to "first-generation" antihistamines, like Benadryl, "second-generation" antihistamines have a longer duration of action (~24 hours in most cases) and cause significantly less sedation. In fact, most "second-generation" antihistamines are labeled and marketed as non-drowsy. They include:

Zyrtec is not considered "non-drowsy", as it can cause sedation in 5-15% of individuals taking the medication. It does, however, produce far less sedation than "first-generation" antihistamines.

Zyrtec is typically dosed once every 24 hours and may be taken with or without food.

About Aspirin

Aspirin can be utilized as an anti-inflammatory, fever reducer, and pain reliever but "low-dose" aspirin (81 mg) is used for its cardiovascular benefits. It inhibits platelet aggregation and helps to protect against heart attack, chest pain, and stroke.

Aspirin may be taken with or without food but is generally recommended with food and water to minimize stomach irritation.
