Tarly asked

Can you take Claritin with high blood pressure? I was diagnosed a few years ago and am taking lisinopril for it. I wanted to make sure it was safe.

Answer

Yes, Claritin (loratadine) can safely be used in those that have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Claritin is not known to raise blood pressure, unlike other over the counter cough/cold product such as Sudafed.

Claritin

Claritin is a "second-generation" antihistamine with a long duration of action (around 24 hours) and is considered to be non-drowsy. It is generally well tolerated but constipation, dry mouth and dry eyes are commonly reported adverse reactions.

Claritin is a good option for once daily dosing to treat and prevent seasonal allergy symptoms, such as:

  • Sneezing
  • Watery eyes
  • Itchy eyes
  • Runny nose

There is no contraindication for Claritin use in those with high blood pressure and it is safe to use.
