Yes, Benadryl (diphenhydramine) may be safely taken with Tylenol (acetaminophen).[1]

In fact, these two drugs are formulated together in the product Tylenol PM! One dose (two caplets) of Tylenol PM, contains 1000 mg of acetaminophen and 50 mg of diphenhydramine. It is used to relieve pain while helping to fall asleep faster.[2]

Section Summary
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is safe to take with Tylenol (acetaminophen).

About Benadryl

Benadryl is a first-generation antihistamine that causes sedation. Benadryl is marketed under many names, one of which is ZzzQuil, targeting folks who can't get a good night's sleep.

Benadryl is well known for treating the itchiness that results from allergic reactions to things like insect bites, laundry detergent, or poison ivy.

It can be taken orally but also comes in a topical form. In addition to treating allergy symptoms, Benadryl can help with insomnia because it causes sedation.

Section Summary
Benadryl is a sedating first-generation antihistamine commonly used as a sleep aid.

About Tylenol

Tylenol (acetaminophen) is an analgesic over the counter medication used to treat fever and pain related to headaches, backaches, toothaches, wounds, or arthritis.

Tylenol is in many over the counter pain, migraine, and cold/cough medications.

Regular strength Tylenol is sold as 325 mg of acetaminophen, Extra strength has 500 mg acetaminophen, and Tylenol Arthritis has 650mg.

Acetaminophen is also sold in some prescription pain medications like Tylenol with Codeine, Vicodin, and Percocet.

We do not recommend a patient take acetaminophen on a daily basis because it can cause liver toxicity when taken chronically, especially if taken with alcohol or illicit drugs.

Section Summary
Tylenol (acetaminophen) is an analgesic and comes in combination with a variety of medications.

Final Words

When taken before bedtime, Tylenol and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are a safe combination. Benadryl can cause confusion and dizziness leading to falls in seniors, so it is not recommended for this population.

It is also not recommended for children unless a doctor has advised or prescribed it. Always consult with your physician before taking any new medications. Each person's body reacts differently and it is good to talk to a doctor about new medications.

There is no known interaction between Benadryl and Tylenol.
