Chris asked

Can you take Benadryl With Aleve? I have been taking Aleve every few days and wanted to know if it was safe to take with Benadryl

Answer

There is no known drug interaction between Benadryl and Aleve as these medications have different mechanisms of action as well as different mechanisms of metabolism. There is also not a risk of increasing a side effect of the medication if these two agents are taken together.

Benadryl (Diphenhydramine)

Benadryl is an antihistamine and is used to treat a wide range of allergic reactions. The most common side effect seen with this medication is drowsiness which is why it is commonly used as a sleep aid. Other side effects of this medication include dry eyes, constipation and urinary retention.

Because of the sedation and potential for confusion this medication is included in the Beers Criteria and should be avoided in the elderly population. The use of Benadryl is contraindicated in infants as well as women who are breastfeeding

Aleve (Naproxen)

Aleve is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and also has properties that decrease pain and fever. It is typically used to treat arthritis symptoms and mild pain. This medication can cause gastrointestinal bleeds which is why it should be taken with food.

It can also exacerbate cardiovascular disease and should be used with caution in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease or risk factors for cardiovascular disease. These side effects are seen more commonly in the elderly population which is why they should be used with caution in a patient over the age of 65 years. This medication also has the potential for damaging the kidneys and its use is not recommended in those patients who have decreased kidney function.

Summary
  • Benadryl and Aleve can safely be taken together. There is no interaction between the two medications.
