Meg asked

Can my daughter take azithromycin? She got a prescription today and she took zarbee's baby naturals cough& mucous relief yesterday. She will be 9 months old the 24th of this month and weighs 16 pounds. She was taking 4 ml of zarbees and shes suppose to take 2 ml on day one then 1 ml on days 2-5 of azithromycin 200mg/ml. I just want to know if my daughter can take her azithromycin or if i should wait a day or 2 for the zarbees to get out of her system?

Answer

Azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic, is safe to take with Zarbee's cough medicine products.  There is no need to separate doses of each. It is important to start the antibiotic as soon as possible to combat your daughter's infection.

Zarbee's cough syrup products do not contain the commonly used over the counter drugs such as dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant) or guaifenesin (expectorant). Instead, they use more natural ingredients such as elderberry and honey. Honey however, is not an ingredient in the baby cough products.

The Zarbee's baby cough syrup in particular contains the following ingredients:

  • Agave syrup
  • Thyme
  • Ivy leaf extract
  • Natural flavors
  • Potassium sorbate

None of the above ingredients have listed or reported interactions with azithromyin.

Some of the Zarbee's nighttime formulas do contain melatonin, but those are considered safe to use with azithromycin as well.

You can feel comfortable dosing your daughter's antibiotic prescription (azithromycin) safely with Zarbee's cough syrup products.
