Is there a drug interaction between red bull and metoprolol?

Red Bull contains a number of stimulant ingredients including (according to their website):
- Caffeine
- Taurine
There is no documented interaction between any of the stimulants in Red Bull and metoprolol. However, it should be noted that metoprolol is used to treat a wide variety of cardiac conditions such as heart failure, hypertension and is used for the reduction of cardiovascular mortality in those who have sustained a definite or suspected heart attack.
Stimulants, such as caffeine, can exacerbate heart conditions and multiple studies show that caffeine can increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias in susceptible individuals. If you are taking metoprolol, it would be prudent to discuss with your doctor whether or not it is safe to drink energy drinks like Red Bull.
