ZzzQuil Pure Zzzs contains melatonin as the active ingredient, so when it comes to potentially interactions, that is what we should be concerned with.

Having said that, there is no known interaction between melatonin and citalopram. They are considered safe to take together.

Melatonin only has one known interaction with an antidepressant, and that is with Luvox (fluvoxamine). In fact, some studies reported that co-administration of the two can increase melatonin levels over 20-fold due to the potential for Luvox to inhibit the metabolism of melatonin. This has not been shown to happen with citalopram, as it is metabolized via a different enzyme.

About Celexa (Citalopram)

Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), most commonly used to treat major depression in adults. It is also used off-label for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), hot flashes, and anxiety disorders. Unlike most other SSRIs, citalopram has no FDA-approved indications in children. Citalopram can be taken with or without food, but food may increase tolerability. In general, it can take up to 4 to 6 weeks to notice the effects citalopram. Citalopram was approved by the FDA for the treatment of depression in adults in July 1998. The FDA approved an oral solution in December 1999 and an orally disintegrating tablet formulation in December 2005.
