Cialis 5mgIn the United States, Cialis (tadalafil) is not slated to be available generically until September of 2018. It is available generically in a few other countries located outside of the United States including Brazil.

If a pharmacy, or someone in the United States is offering generic Cialis (tadalafil), be very wary as there is a good chance it is fraudulent. If you are getting it from a reputable source, generic medications (generic Cialis included) should be just as effective as the brand name counterpart. Generic medications contain the same amount of active ingredient and are put through various studies when being approved by the FDA to ensure that both the rate and extent of absorption are the same (within a margin of error) as the brand name.

The difference between brand and generic drugs comes in the inactive ingredients, or 'fillers' as they are sometimes called. This is why brand and generic medications often look different from one another. It would be rare that the ingredients in the generic drug would cause it to work differently in someone, but it can happen.

In regards to the 5mg dosing, it typically is used for two indications:

  • 5mg once daily for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • 5mg once daily for erectile dysfunction without regard to timing

Doses above 5mg are typically one time doses, used on an as needed basis, for erectile dysfunction. It is becoming more and more common to see people taking the 5mg dose once daily as there is no need to take a dose immediately before sexual activity like other erectile dysfunction drugs (such as Viagra).
