Stevie asked

How long can Trifluridine (name brand Viroptic) be left out of the refrigerator for, hours? It's a refrigerated eye drop.

Answer

The package insert for Viroptic (Trifluridine) eye drops states that the medication should be stored refrigerated from 36 degrees F to 46 degrees F (2 degrees C to 8 degrees C). The package information does not state any information regarding how long the drug is stable if it is accidentally left at room temperature. The only data we could find regarding the stability of the product if left outside the fridge is as follows:

"Off-label information indicates the drug is stable when maintained up to 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) for two weeks. However, due to slight changes in pH, you may experience side effects such as ocular stinging or discomfort.

Even with the above information, it is recommended that if there are excursions from the required storage conditions for a drug, you or your pharmacist call the manufacturer to find out whether the medication can be still used or if it needs to be replaced. It helps to gather as much information as you can including:

  • How long the medication was stored outside the refrigerator
  • Where the medication was stored
  • The LOT # of the medication
  • The expiration date

All of this information will allow the manufacturer of the product to give you the best recommendation.
