I have a continent ileostomy. Many of my pills do not dissolve before passing through my system. How long does it take for loratadine to dissolve?

Answer

The dissolution time of loratadine (generic for Claritin) depends on the product formulation. Loratadine is available in the following formulations:

  • Liquid
  • Tablet
  • Chewable tablet
  • Liquigel
  • Dissolving tablet ('Reditab')
  • Extended release tablet

The most common dosage form of loratadine is tablets. Sources vary, but most data points to loratadine tablets having a dissolution time of around 60 minutes. If you are looking for the fastest dissolution time, the dissolving tablets (brand name Reditabs), dissolve within seconds after placed on the tongue. Liquid forms of loratadine are also available and are generally absorbed faster and more completely than solid dosage forms.

After taking by mouth, loratadine begins to work within 1—3 hours. Peak effects generally occur in 8—12 hours and will last around 24 hours. Taking loratadine with food increases absorption but the peak effects may be delayed.The  half-life (i.e. time it take for 50% of the drug to be metabolized) of loratadine is around 8 hours.
