Cybil asked

I have been instructed to take Zyrtec 10mg in the morning. I take amlodipine besylate 10 mg each morning for my blood pressure. Can I take the Zyrtec along with my blood pressure med or should I take them @ separate times?

Answer

Zyrtec (cetirizine) does not have any listed or reported drug interactions with blood pressure medication and combined use is considered to be safe.

However, Zyrtec (cetirizine) can cause drowsiness in individuals. In fact, unlike other second generation antihistamines like Claritin, Zyrtec has a high incidence of drowsiness (13.7% of individuals) and fatigue (5.9% of individuals).

While Zyrtec doesn't interact with blood pressure medication, there can be additive effects of drowsiness and sedation. Many blood pressure medications, especially when treatment just begins, can cause fatigue and lightheadedness. Caution is advised using Zyrtec with other medications that can cause sedation.

If Zyrtec doesn't make you tired, it is fine to take along with your blood pressure medication. Be advised however, that there could be mild sedation with the combination. Often times when trying a new combination of medication, it is advised to begin on a day you are home, and don't need to drive until you know how the combination affects you.
