Does Vyvanse Show Up On A Saliva Drug Test?
In our latest question and answer, the pharmacist discusses whether or not Vyvanse will show up on a saliva test.
I’m prescribed Vyvanse 1-30mg per day. I took 2 of them, 1 about 12:00pm and the 2nd at approximately 5:00pm. Then I had a saliva drug screen about 8-8:15pm same night. How likely will the test levels show I took 2 the same day? Is it possible the half-life will only show I took one right before the test? I’ve taken 1 pill and had a instant saliva screen a few hours later, and it was negative for amphetamines. What are my chances?
Yes, Vyvanse will show up on a saliva test. In fact, most studies show that levels of amphetamine (Vyvanse in an amphetamine product) are higher in the saliva than in the blood at any given point.
Studies have also shown that amphetamine tests done using oral fluid (e.g. saliva) are just as reliable, if not more so, that urine or blood screenings.
After taking by mouth, amphetamine will be rapidly detectable in the saliva, within a few hours at most. In addition, amphetamine is generally detectable in the saliva for 2 to 3 days. Therefore, if you took Vyvanse at 12:00 PM and had a saliva drug test at 8:00 PM, there is a relatively high chance you will test positive.
Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) is an amphetamine stimulant medication used to treat ADHD. It is considered a "prodrug", meaning it is metabolized to the active compound in our bodies, which is dextroamphetamine.
Dextroamphetamine, the active metabolite of Vyvanse, has a half-life around 12 hours and will last (i.e. be detectable) for around 60 hours, or 2 to 3 days, in the body.
After taking a dose of Vyvanse, peak concentrations of dextroamphetamine occur after approximately 3.5 hours. The total duration of action of Vyvanse per dose is around 10 to 14 hours per dose.
- Vyvanse is detectable in the saliva within a few hours and for up to 2 to 3 days.
