Beanie asked

What time should I take Zoloft? Is the morning or evening better for maximum effectiveness?

Answer

Zoloft (sertraline) may be taking in the morning or evening. Multiple studies on sertraline have shown that time of administration has no effect on the efficacy of the drug.

The most important factor in regard to taking sertraline is to keep your dosing consistent, meaning if you take your first dose in the evening, keep taking it that way.

Optimal Zoloft Administration Time

As stated above, there is no one recommended time to take Zoloft and the optimal time will vary by individual. Pick a time that is most convenient for you to take it but be aware of the side effects it may cause. Many people choose evening administration to better handle the potential side effects, especially when first starting. These side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Drowsiness
  • GI problems
  • Dizziness

While these side effects generally go away after a few weeks of consistent dosing, they may be easier to handle in the evening if they occur.

It is important to note that food intake is not a consideration when taking Zoloft as the medication may be taken with or without food. While studies show that there is a small increase in max blood levels when taken with food, this doesn't appear to be clinically significant.

Summary

Zoloft (sertraline) may be taking in the morning or evening, with or without food as these factors do not influence the effectiveness of Zoloft. Take Zoloft at the time that is most convenient for you, and at a time that allows you to take your dose consistently.
