Yes, in the United States, Flagyl (metronidazole) requires a prescription from an authorized prescriber, such as a medical doctor, osteopath, or nurse practitioner.

Flagyl (Metronidazole)

Metronidazole has a broad range of activity, and is considered both an antibacterial and antiprotozoal agent. It is used for treatment of a variety of infections including:

  • Trichomonas vaginalis
  • Amebiasis
  • Giardiasis
  • Helicobacter pylori

Metronidazole is generally well tolerated but is known to cause nausea, stomach cramping, diarrhea and urine discoloration. In addition, it should not be taken with alcohol.
