I took 1 Ibuprofen 200 at 2:10PM. It is now 4:40. Since I missed my Prilosec this morning, is it okay to take it now?

Answer

Prilosec (omeprazole) is a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) used to treat heartburn and acid reflux. While Prilosec can technically be given anytime of the day, it is  most effective if dosed in the morning. The recommended dosage instructions are as follows:

  • Administer Prilosec on an empty stomach, 60 minutes before meals. If taking once daily, administer before the first meal of the day.

Why Should Prilosec Be Taken In The Morning?

PPI medications, like Prilosec, block acid production through inhibition of "proton pumps" ( H+/K+ ATPase enzyme). PPI medications only inhibit actively secreting pumps. In other words, the acid pumps must be stimulated (e.g. from food) in order to be inhibited. Therefore, Prilosec is best taken 30-60 minutes before your first meal of the day. This allows time for the drug to be absorbed and ready to work when food is consumed (which will activate acid secretion).

Now, if you forgot your morning dose and are trying to catch up by taking it in the afternoon, that is fine. It just may not be as effective that day.
