Can you split Belsomra in half?

Answer

Yes, Belsomra (suvorexant) can be cut or split in half. However, the tablets are film coated and blister packaged as they are sensitive to moisture. If you do split Belsomra tablets, it would be prudent to use both halves of tablet as quickly as possible (within the dosing guidelines) to prevent drug degradation.

In general, most drugs that are not controlled or extended release may be cut or split, but that is not always the case. As mentioned above, some medications can be more sensitive to environmental factors such as moisture. If your doctor has instructed you to cut the Belsomra tablets, you can do so safely. You may notice a slight shedding of a transparent film, as the tablet are 'film coated' to protect from moisture. Kind in mind to store the unused cut half in an air tight container to protect it from moisture and use it as soon as possible.

In addition, Belsomra tablets may be crushed if necessary to ease administration. You may notice a film coating as well if you crush the tablets.

Belsomra is an alternative to more commonly used sleep medications such Ambien (zolpidem). It is the first drug in a new class of medications known as orexin receptor antagonists. Orexin neurotransmitters are known to promote wakefulness. The theory is that by blocking them, wakefulness is disrupted, helping people to fall asleep. According to the clinical trials, Belsomra helps people with insomnia fall asleep about 5 to 10 minutes faster than usual.

While Belsomra can be split as discussed above, it is important to talk to your doctor if you are having problems on your prescribed dose. Your doctor may be able to adjust your prescription to a dose that does not require splitting, helping to preserve the integrity of the tablets.
