Can you alternate between Norco and Ibuprofen? If so, is there a certain length of time needed between the two?

Answer

Ibuprofen and Norco (hydrocodone/acetaminophen) may be taken at the same time or alternated. No time needs to pass between taking either medication with the other. Often times, they are prescribed to be taken at the same time for severe pain and inflammation. Alternatively, some doctors may prescribe ibuprofen for mild pain, but recommend taking Norco when pain becomes more severe.

You should space each Norco dose according to your prescription instructions, about 4 to 6 hours for most individuals. You should also space your ibuprofen according to your written prescription if applicable or at most every 4 hours if taking it over the counter. You should not take more than 1,200 mg of ibuprofen if taking it over the counter or 3,200mg of ibuprofen if taking it by prescription.

Norco

Norco (Hydrocodone/acetaminophen) is a combination opiate agonist and analgesic that is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. Norco may be given with food or milk to help prevent GI irritation. You should titrate the dose of Norco slowly, utilizing the lowest effective dose to minimize the possibility of side effects. Common side effects associated with taking Norco include but are not limited to:

  • Constipation
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Euphoria
Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used most commonly to treat pain, arthritis, and inflammation. Ibuprofen should be administered with food or milk to help prevent gastrointestinal irritation. Common side effects associated with taking Ibuprofen include but are not limited to:

  • Dyspepsia
  • Heartburn
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
